Psychoanaliza na Czasie (Wstępniak) / Psychoanalysis on Time (Editorial)

Ostatnie dekady 19-ego wieku i pierwszych kilka dekad wieku 20-ego to w filozofii czas Czasu, epoka pogłębionej refleksji nad temporalnym wymiarem ludzkiego życia. W wielu wypadkach refleksja ta stanowiła część rozleglejszych, niezwykle ożywionych poszukiwań, zmierzających do wypracowania nowych sposobów myślenia o człowieku.

Zapraszam do lektury.

Abstract: The first part of the paper provides an overview of the psychoanalytic notion of Nachträglichkeit, the development of the concept in Freud, and its reception within psychoanalysis. Various forms of Nachträglichkeit are presented in an attempt to systematize it. The second part of the paper deals with the contemporary state of society and takes up Alexander Kluge’s formulation, who spoke of the “stretched present” that knows no future. In the face of the current situation—the coronavirus pandemic, war, and climate change—this diagnosis seems to be correct; fear in the present obscures the future and leads to a longing for a seemingly better past, a sentiment exploited by right-wing movements.

Czas zabliźniony. Logika traumy i logika szczęścia w teorii Freuda, Benjamina i Adorna / The Scarred Time: The Logic of Trauma and the Logic of Happiness in Freud, Benjamin and Adorno

W drugiej części tekstu pokazuje, w jaki sposób logika Nachträglichkeit pracuje w wybranych fragmentach pism Benjamina i Adorna jako temporalny schemat działania szczęścia.

Abstract: The article aims to juxtapose the psychoanalytic theory of trauma with the writings of Walter Benjamin and Theodor W. Adorno on the concept of happiness. The concept enabling such a comparison is Nachträglichkeit, a mechanism employed by Sigmund Freud to analyze the temporal impact of trauma. In the first part of the text, it describes the operation of deferred action in Freud’s theory by referring to Jean Laplanche’s reflections. In the second part of the text, it demonstrates how the logic of Nachträglichkeit operates in selected passages of Benjamin’s and Adorno’s writings, serving as a temporal schema for the logic of happiness. This similarity helps to underscore the implicit emancipatory and vitalist stakes in psychoanalytic theory. Viewed from this perspective, all three German thinkers emerge as theorists of the genesis of the modern subject. Therefore, the anthropological psychoanalytic diagnosis can serve as a starting point for possible thinking about emancipation.

Abstrakt: Porównując ze sobą koncepcje czasu społecznego Norberta Eliasa
i Jacques’a Lacana, autor wpierw wyłania przesłanki teoretyczne tych koncepcji, a następnie ukazuje konsekwencje przyjęcia każdej z nich. Neokantyzm Eliasa przeciwstawiony jest dialektycznemu ujęciu relacji podmiotu z przedmiotem u Lacana. Autor pokazuje jednak, że „nowy sofizmat” Lacana niesie ze sobą oryginalną i przekraczającą horyzont
projektów filozoficznych konstrukcję, pozwalającą połączyć w grze konstytuującej mnogie podmiotowości proces genezy czasu społecznego, wyłanianie się fundamentów logiki i wreszcie kwestię uznania, czyli równości albo jej braku w relacjach między ludźmi.

Abstract: In comparing the ideas of social time developed by Norbert Elias and Jacques Lacan, the author first reconstructs the theoretical premises underlying these ideas and then shows the consequences of adopting each of them. Elias’s neo-Kantianism is contrasted with Lacan’s dialectical view of the subject-object relationship. However, the author shows that Lacan’s “new sophism” contains an original construction that transcends the horizon of philosophical projects and makes it possible to bring together the process of the genesis of social time, the emergence of the foundations of logic, and, finally, the question of recognition—that is, equality or the lack thereof in relations between people—all within the play of the constitution of plural subjectivities.

Abstract: The article is dedicated to the psychological phenomenon of the inability to feel alive, as depicted in Jean-Charles Fitoussi’s film Days I Don’t Exist (2002). The film presents a thought-provoking experiment, compelling the audience to imagine the life of a man who disappears every other day and returns to the same place after twenty-four hours. The article describes the inability to process emotions, thoughts, and memories, which must be constantly erased and eventually become lost. The regular disappearances of the main character prevent him from experiencing a genuine sense of being alive, even when he physically reappears in the world. This fragile structure is expected to undergo a transformation when the man falls in love, bringing hope that a relationship with another person will help integrate the days when he exists and those when he disappears, both the represented and unrepresented aspects of the mind. The film analysis leads to the formulation of clinical questions concerning how to address the challenges of working with severely damaged psyches, for whom the constant threat is a sense of dissolution.

Zasada przyjemności i „cicha robota” popędów śmierci / The Pleasure Principle and the „Silent Work” of the Death Drives

Abstract: In this article, I point out the specific way in which Freud, in Beyond the Pleasure Principle, conceived the relationship between the life drives (Eros) and the death drive (Thanatos), thereby changing his previous approach to the sexual drives and the pleasure principle associated with them. I show that the basic assumptions of his theory of the drives presented in this article are (1) to grant the death drive ontological primacy over the life drives, and (2) to demonstrate that these two groups of drives are not opposed to each other, but are rather two organically related sides of the life process. The life drives only enable Thanatos to achieve its regressive goal (a return to the level of inorganic matter) by way of a circular path. That is, life is only an extended path toward death. Ultimately, therefore, the process of life proceeds according to the regressive rhythm of Thanatos, which silently does its work within it, eventually reaching the state of Nirvana, the quieting of all tensions. At the same time, this state is paradoxically associated with the highest form of pleasure, attained at the point where the life and death drives meet. By contrast, the sensual pleasure that the sexual drives are oriented toward obtaining is only an external by-product of this process. Although it is particularly striking, its significance in the process of life as defined by the regressive movement of Thanatos is secondary.

Abstract: The discovery of the timelessness of the unconscious is one of the few fragments of psychoanalytic theory that never underwent systematic elaboration by Freud himself, even though he repeatedly stated it as a desideratum of psychoanalytic research. Freud’s outlines concerning timelessness point toward the following problems: (1) the relation between psychology and the philosophy of time, especially Kant’s transcendental aesthetics; (2) the psychogenesis of time consciousness as the anticipated repetition of past wish fulfillments in unconscious phantasy; (3) the temporal unchangeability and disorder of unconscious mental processes as conceptualized in both preservation and retroaction; and (4) the implications of the timelessness of the unconscious for psychoanalytic practice concerning the facilitation of hope. Drawing upon Freud’s brief comments concerning timelessness and his more thorough discussions of phenomena that have explicit and implicit relevance to a theorization of time, I clarify and reconstruct the general lines of Freud’s thoughts about time with reference to the four identified problems. I thereby show that the study of the timelessness of the unconscious and the ways and means of the temporalization of consciousness are of central interest to psychoanalytic theory and practice.

Abstract: The author of the paper examines the interrelationship between Freud’s account of the concept of the Thing in his Project for a Scientific Psychology and the problem of the origin of categories within Kantian philosophy. Drawing on Catherine Malabou’s “epigenesis of pure reason,” the article proposes an alternative approach to overcoming the correlationist loop, based on the homeomorphic relationship between representational content and material structure that underlies Freud’s account of the mental apparatus.

Abstract: In psychoanalytic work, we deal with different states of mind and events, and the work of a psychoanalyst is similar to that of a photographer. We must consider a certain moment in a psychoanalytic session or a photography session in which we can capture the experience through the thinking of our mental apparatus or the sensor of our camera. I describe moments in a psychoanalytic session when it is difficult to capture and grasp something because there is too much movement. The mental apparatus then cannot take in the sensory experience and develop it into thinking. There are also moments that are static, boring, and require a change of scenery. Both states—that is, situations in which time “flies” very fast as well as those in which time “drags”—are very difficult to capture and think about. What is important, however, is the dynamics of change between these two states. Similarly, during street photography sessions and in war photography, one should stop and try to think under the pressure of the impulsiveness of life in these conditions. On the other hand, in a portrait photography session, one needs to evoke a certain expression in the subject that is closest to that person’s emotional state.
